Frostbite Engine

The Frostbite Engine is a proprietary 3D game engine developed by DICE, a Swedish video game studio based in Stockholm. Originally built to power the Battlefield series, it debuted in Battlefield: Bad Company (2008) and quickly became synonymous with large-scale, destructible open environments, dynamic weather, and ambitious multiplayer maps that pushed console and PC hardware to its limits.

After Electronic Arts acquired DICE in 2010, Frostbite was licensed across the EA portfolio, powering titles from BioWare's Dragon Age: Inquisition to EA Sports' FIFA 17, FIFA 18, and FIFA 19. By FIFA 20, the series pivots back to EA Sports' proprietary tooling, but the visual bar Frostbite set remains the reference point fans still measure against.
